A new artspace has emerged in the heart of Fenelon in the Colborne Street Gallery. Gallery owners Tim Wisener and Chris Van Lierop originally secured the space at 44 Colborne Street thinking that it would be a good spot for consulting with clients they work with through their design firm, Home by Tim + Chris.

Since then, their plans have evolved, and they chose to transform the space into an art gallery where they plan to feature works by both local and non-local artists. In order to host beautiful works of art, Tim and Chris first had to beautify their space. They did an excellent job at accomplishing that task by removing the drop ceiling and adding a high lofted ceiling, refurbishing the original floor grates, and removing 7 layers of flooring to recover the original maple hardwood floors beneath.

For now, the walls boast pieces of work from Tim and Chris’ own personal collection. It’s a lovely and personal glimpse into their artistic tastes, and while the pieces aren’t technically for sale, if you name the right price you may be in luck.

In addition to lining the walls with their own favourite pieces, Tim and Chris are currently hosting pieces by local artisan Christina Handley of Handley Acres Custom Creations. Along with a 4-foot vintage sawblade that has been designed and cut with stallions all over, there is an intricately carved oil tank, which casts gorgeous shadows on the walls and ceiling when lit up.

Tim and Chris are working with Christina to bring in more of her intricate artistic pieces, which she creates by drawing free-hand designs onto metal using soapstone, and she then cuts out shapes with a plasma cutter. We can also look forward to featured work in the gallery from local Sturgeon Point painter and sculptor Elizabeth Barrett, and many more to come.

The firm opening date for the gallery space is still to be determined, but the space promises much more than just Canadian art; Tim and Chris hope to also host paint nights and art classes, and they are open to hosting small community events there as well. Stay tuned to their space on Colborne Street for more as we head into the spring and summer seasons this year.

Also keep an eye out for the Home by Tim + Chris design studio to pop up soon – if you are looking for a keen eye for re-designing your home, Tim and Chris will soon be the go-to designers in Kawartha Lakes.
