Tomlin Inspires First Starring Role in 27 Years (May 2016)

May 9, 2016
‘Grandma’ screens May 31, 2016 in Fenelon Falls

Can you believe it’s been 27 years since Lily Tomlin has had a starring role in a film? Bringing Tomlin back to the forefront is her performance as Elle in ‘Grandma’, a comedy-drama written and directed by Paul Weitz, being shown by Films by the Falls on May 31st at the Fenelon Falls Secondary School. Tomlin’s own personality helped to form the character she ends up playing in the film. While working with Weitz on his 2013 film ‘Admission’ starring Tina Fey, a story Weitz had been trying to sharpen up finally came Grandma Still 2into focus. Says Weitz “After meeting Lily, the voice and the character really clicked… I had a lot of it worked out in my head, and then I just went to a coffee shop and wrote it longhand.” Collaboration between the two didn’t stop there; Tomlin’s own 1955 Dodge Royal was used in the film as her character’s car.

The plot in ‘Grandma’ takes place over a single day and captures the events of Elle (Tomlin) and her granddaughter Sage (Julia Gardner) as they hunt for the emergency funds Sage asks for when she shows up unannounced on her grandmother’s doorstep. The comedy pedigree of director Paul Weitz mixes expertly with his poignant insights into family relationships as his two female leads spend the day visiting a past that’s never too far behind. Although the movie can be considered short at 80 minutes, the story grabs hold and packs a punch without wasting any time.

Tickets for ‘Grandma’ cost $10 each and will be available at the door on May 31, 2016 or in advance starting May 10th at Sweet Bottoms Coffee – 19 Colborne St, Fenelon Falls. Season Passes are $25 for 3 movies – valid during the Fall 2016 season as well – available at the door on May 31, 2016. Doors open at 6:30 PM with the feature presentation beginning at 7:30 PM. Fenelon Falls Secondary School is located at 66 Lindsay St. Films by the Falls screens movies on the last Tuesday of each month from September to May (excluding December). Brazilian Movie Translates Family Dynamics (Apr. 2016)

April 11, 2016

‘The Second Mother’ screens April 26, 2016 in Fenelon Falls

Still 2Having worked as a nanny and being a mother herself, writer and director Anna Muylaert knew she had an intimate story worth bringing to the silver screen. Muylaert waited until she was mature enough to tackle the heavy social issues contained in The Second Mother, screening April 26th at the Fenelon Falls Secondary School, with humour and levity. Four drafts and a decade later production began and lasted about 9 months, a fitting incubation period for a cinematic tome about transplanted parenting. Centering around the dynamics of two families, The Second Mother focuses primarily on Val, a nanny and mother figure to the only child of her employers and the birth mother to another child she left behind in order to find work in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

“Muylaert’s film is an effervescent comic drama that delights in the disruption of traditional upstairs/downstairs dynamics” says Julian Carrington of the Globe and Mail. When Val’s daughter Jessica comes to the big Brazilian city to live with her Mother for the first time in 13 years social order is flipped on its head. Jessica’s frankness and candor is not easily ignored and lasting changes are waiting around the corner for everyone in the house.

Tickets for ‘The Second Mother’ cost $10 each and will be available at the door on April 26, 2016 or in advance starting April 12th at Sweet Bottoms Coffee – 19 Colborne St, Fenelon Falls. Season Passes are $25 for 3 movies – available at the door on April 26, 2016. Doors open at 6:30 PM with the feature presentation beginning at 7:30 PM. Blacklist This Drama At Your Own Risk (Mar. 2016)

February 29, 2016

‘Trumbo’ screens March 29, 2016 in Fenelon Falls

Films by the Falls (www.filmsbythefalls.com) is screening Trumbo this month, a feature starring Bryan Cranston, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning actor whose performance in this movie garnered him a Best Actor nomination at this years Academy Awards. Titled after Cranston’s character, Trumbo will show at 7:30 pm on March 29, 2016 at Fenelon Falls Secondary School. A stellar cast, including Diane Lane and Helen Mirren, round out this true story based on the blacklisting of communist sympathizers in a pointed quest by the US government to rid American movies of communist influences in Hollywood in the 1940s. Cameron Bailey of TIFF says Trumbo is “a gripping drama that sheds light on one of the darkest chapters in Hollywood history”.

Still 1Dalton Trumbo was a screen writer with popular movies under his belt but unpopular views in a post-WWII America. He and 9 other men, dubbed the Hollywood Ten, were subpoenaed to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947 and eventually, with about 300 others, were barred from working in Hollywood altogether. Not to be stopped, Trumbo turned subversive and wrote thirty scripts under borrowed names while exiled with his family in Mexico. Two of those scripts, Roman Holiday (1953) and The Brave One (1956) won oscars for Best Screenwriting, although they were not credited to Trumbo until many decades later. In the 1960s Kirk Douglas outed Trumbo as the true author of Spartacus which is cited as the beginning of the end of the blacklist era in Hollywood.

Tickets for Trumbo cost $10 each and will be available at the door on March 29, 2016 or in advance starting March 9th at Sweet Bottoms Coffee – 19 Colborne St, Fenelon Falls. The season pass is back! Each pass is $25 for 3 movies – available only at the door on March 29, 2016. Doors open at 6:30 PM with the feature presentation beginning at 7:30 PM. Life Lessons From Behind The Wheel (Feb. 2016)

February 1, 2016

LearningToDrive-1‘Learning To Drive’ screens February 23, 2016 in Fenelon Falls

Films by the Falls (www.filmsbythefalls.com) is excited to bring a coming of (middle) age, feel-good comedy to the screen of Fenelon Falls Secondary School on February 23, 2016. Fenelon’s film series continues it’s winter/spring 2016 season with a movie about determination, commitment and discovery. Director Isabel Coixet’s film has homed in on the communication of every day life and how those communicated details build and define a person’s character. Films by the Falls’ February choice is a movie with charm and grace served up as lessons on how to observe the world around you as you drive yourself to wherever it is you want to go. Learning To Drive will entertain anyone who’s put their life back together after something failed, which chances are, is each one of us.

FBTF Poster 2016-01 Al Purdy was Here

‘Al Purdy Was Here’ screens January 26, 2016 in Fenelon Falls

FENELON FALLS, ON – Films by the Falls kicks off 2016 with the documentary ‘Al Purdy Was Here’ about a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, cottage-building Canadian man born almost 100 years ago. On January 26, 2016 at the Fenelon Falls Secondary School meet Al Purdy, one of our countries most celebrated poets you may have never heard of. A high-school drop out, Al spent his formative years hopping freight trains and working in mattress factories across the country. In 1957 he and his wife returned to Ontario and built an A-frame cottage on Robin Lake in nearby Ameliasburgh, Prince Edward County. It was in this cabin that Al Purdy found his voice, spending much of the rest of his life writing in the home he built.

Al is one of those artists whose spider web of inspiration reaches down through generations and across artistic disciplines. ‘Al Purdy Was Here’ uses archival footage and interviews with Canada’s top authors, musicians and actors to paint the portrait of a man who practically founded a genre.  Dubbed Canada’s unofficial poet laureate, Al Purdy changed the way our country viewed itself. This film and the accompanying benefit album is part of a movement to restore Al’s A-frame for use as a writer’s residency. With appearances by Margaret Atwood, Gord Downie, Sarah Harmer, Joseph Boyden, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Cockburn, Neil Young, Adrianne Clarkson and set in the stunning landscapes of the Canada he loved, this documentary is an educational and entertaining profile of not just a man, but also of the country that shaped him and his work. Organizers are awaiting confirmation that a special guest will attend the screening for a Q&A session after the film is shown.

UPDATE FROM FILMS BY THE FALLS: We are excited to announce that we have Nick Taylor, who was the editor of the upcoming film “Al Purdy Was Here”, attending our screening on January 26th. After the screening, he will talk about his role on the film and will answer questions from the audience. This is a great opportunity as many films come to life in the editing room, and he will have lots of insights and quite possibly stories for us. Please share this great news with your film loving friends.

Tickets for ‘Al Purdy Was Here’ are $10 and will be available at the door on January 26, 2016 or in advance starting January 12th at Sweet Bottoms Coffee – 19 Colborne St, Fenelon Falls.  Doors open at 6:30 PM with the feature presentation beginning at 7:30 PM.  Fenelon Falls Secondary School is located at 66 Lindsay St. Films by the Falls screens movies on the last Tuesday of each month from September to May (excluding December). For more information visit www.filmsbythefalls.com

About the movie: By turns elegiac and celebratory, this documentary tribute to the late, great Canadian poet Al Purdy features readings, reminiscences and performances from some of the greatest names in Canadian letters and music. This film is rated PG. For more information visit http://www.alpurdywashere.com

Remembrance Day in Fenelon Falls (Oct 2015)

November 9, 2015

remambrance-day

On Remembrance Day members of the armed forces (soldiers, sailors and airmen) are commemorated. The other common name for this day is Armistice Day which marks the date and time when armies stopped fighting World War I, on November 11th at 11am in 1918 (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month). Some 100,000 Canadian soldiers died in the First and Second World Wars.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 238 – Fenelon Falls will be holding their annual Poppy Campaign. It is not only to honour the fallen that we observe Remembrance Day each and every year, as part of our observance we also acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of the Veterans including those currently serving. In fact, through the generosity of Canadians who take part in the Poppy Campaign, they are able to serve Veterans and their families on a daily basis. With a number of advocacy efforts and member services, they ensure that they are cared for and treated with the respect they deserve.

Legion Volunteers will be selling poppies around town. Show your support by wearing a poppy over your heart.

Join the local Remembrance Day Services held by the Legion. Meet them on November 11th at 11am sharp at the Cenotaph at Francis St West and Market Street – beside the Post Office in Fenelon Falls.

You Don’t Need To Like Math To Love This Movie (Nov. 2015)

November 8, 2015

A Brilliant Young Mind screens November 24, 2015 in Fenelon Falls

BrilliantYoungMindAs the weather continues to cool outside (against many of our collective wishes) there’s a movie screening in Fenelon Falls on November 24, 2015 that will surely warm your heart. A Brilliant Young Mind follows teenage math prodigy Nathan Ellis as he heads to Taiwan with his fellow British squad-mates to prepare for the upcoming International Mathematics Olympiad. Not your average kids, not your average love story; but as socially awkward as Nathan is, love still resonates with him when he meets a girl on a rival team. Asa Butterfield (Hugo, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas) stars as the brilliant young mind himself with Sally Hawkins as his mother and Rafe Spall (Life of Pi) as the influential teacher who at times ends up learning a lesson or two from his student. ‘I’ll See You In My Dreams’ screens in Fenelon Falls October 27

SeeYouInMyDreams

Next up for Films by the Falls (www.filmsbythefalls.com) is the thoughtful drama “I’ll See You In My Dreams”, screening October 27, 2015 at the Fenelon Falls Secondary School. Written and directed by Brett Haley, the film stars the Tony and Emmy winning legendary leading lady Blythe Danner as Carol Peterson, a woman who discovers with the help of her daughter and a sassy group of friends that an undefined life can be defined at any time.

Shot over 18 days in California, viewers are swept along with Carol as she embarks on a new phase of a life that continues to evolve. “I’m sure many people my age will see this and enjoy it,” says Danner. “But my hope is that audiences will recognize its universal appeal. Whether you’re young, middle-aged, or older, I think you’ll empathize with Carol. It’s human to wonder how you are going to age and what is ahead of you in life. The movie offers some insight and some solace. I think people will have a lot of fun and also be moved.”

About the movie: “In this vibrant, funny, and heartfelt film, a widow and former songstress discovers that life can begin anew at any age. With the support of three loyal girlfriends (June Squibb, Rhea Perlman, and Mary Kay Place), Carol (Blythe Danner) decides to embrace the world, embarking on an unlikely friendship with her pool maintenance man, pursuing a new love interest, and reconnecting with her daughter.” – TIFF (http://tiff.net/filmcircuit/film/2596). FBTF Poster 2015-09 Red Army

The Documentary RED ARMY Kicks Off Fall 2015 Films by the Falls Season

Films by the Falls (http://www.filmsbythefalls.com) is back with a hot-shot doc about how real hockey scores in life and in politics. Screening at the Fenelon Falls Secondary School on September 29th, the documentary RED ARMY, a fan favourite from the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, is told maiuny through the recollections of famous defenseman Slava Fetisov as he remembers his time playing state-sponsored hockey in the Soviet Union. From the age of 16 to 31, Fetisov fought many foes on and off the ice, ending up a Russian hero and enemy of the state at different turns in his career. A political thriller, an intense biography, and a hard-hitting-on-the-ice action movie, audiences will gain an insiders’ perspective into a fascinating part of cold war history. Written, directed and produced by Gabe Polsky, RED ARMY is an eye-opening journey into a country that some argue elevated hockey into an art form.

Season Passes will be available at the door on September 29th; 3 movies for $25 – cash only. Individual tickets for RED ARMY are $10, also available at the door on September 29, 2015.  Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm.  Fenelon Falls Secondary School is located at 66 Lindsay St. Films by the Falls screens movies on the last Tuesday of each month.  The Fall season runs from September to November; the Winter/Spring season runs from January to May.

About the movie: “Red Army is a feature documentary about the Soviet Union and the most successful dynasty in sports history: the Red Army hockey team. Told from the perspective of its captain Slava Fetisov, the story portrays his transformation from national hero to political enemy. From the USSR to Russia, the film examines how sport mirrors social and cultural movements and parallels the rise and fall of the Red Army team with the Soviet Union.” – TIFF (http://tiff.net/filmcircuit/film/2483). Rated PG.

Ride for Sight Returns to Fenelon Falls (May 2015)

May 23, 2015

Ride for Site

The year was 1979. Jack was out enjoying an evening motorcycle ride with friends when he realized he couldn’t see the road ahead.  Quick to act, Jack’s riding buddies moved into a close formation around his motorcycle, and used their headlights to guide his way home.

Jack soon learned that he was losing his vision to an incurable blinding eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa. In hopes of finding a cure, his friends founded the Ride for Sight in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness – Canada’s largest charity supporting sight-saving research.

The 37th annual Ride for Sight Central Ontario motorcycle fundraiser is Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Fenelon Fairgrounds.

“Ride for Sight weekend is a great party, but what’s even more important, is that we’ve raised over $20 million for sight-saving research,” said Mike Harwood, volunteer chair of the Central Ontario Ride for Sight. Harwood rides in memory of his late father and his struggle with age-related macular degeneration.

Over 1 million Canadians are touched by retinal eye diseases, like retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and that number is growing. AMD, alone, is the leading cause of vision loss for Canadians over the age of 50.

WHEN:                      June 13, 2015

WHERE:                    Fenelon Fairgrounds, 27 Veteran’s Way, Fenelon Falls,  K0M 1M0

On Saturday morning, riders depart the Fenelon Fairgrounds at 11 am for a 90 minute motorcycle parade. The stunning scenic route will take riders through the most beautiful country roads in the Kawartha Lakes.

Saturday night, Canadian rock legends Honeymoon Suite headline a concert featuring Southern Sky, Candy Mountain, Bare Rump, The Chameleons and comedian Al King. Participants can also enjoy free tent camping, bike games, demo rides, a stunt show, a vendor marketplace and so much more.

The Foundation Fighting Blindness is leading the fight against blindness by advancing retinal disease research, education and public awareness. The Foundation offers hope to over 1 million Canadians living with vision loss by funding research to restore sight.
