Bone Health (Nov. 2017)

October 25, 2017

UntitledWe have all heard that women over a certain age are at an increased risk of Osteoporosis, but that is where our knowledge often ends. Did you know that both men and women typically reach their peak bone mass in their early twenties? How about the fact that while one in four women in Canada over age 50 has Osteoporosis, according to McLeod Medical, one in eight men do as well.

So what can you do to halt the development of osteoporosis and improve your overall bone health? First and foremost of course is nutrition.   Bone is a living tissue which constantly renews itself and therefore we need to provide the basic building blocks. For persons over 50, Canada’s Food Guide recommends three servings of milk and alternatives (including yogurt and cheese) per day. If you are lactose intolerant, remember that goats’ milk is lactose free, many of the soy and almond beverages are calcium fortified and canned salmon with bones is not only high in calcium but also Omega fatty acids.

In addition to calcium, bones are also made up of protein which gives bones their strength and flexibility. Again, Canada’s Food Guide recommends 2-3 servings of meat or alternatives per day for adults over 50. These include the obvious (beef, pork and chicken), but also beans, lentils, kale, nuts, tofu and egg whites. Not only does lack of protein lead to weakened bones, but also to weaker muscles and increased falls.

Of course simply feeding your muscles and bones won’t do it, we also have to exercise to keep them strong, prevent falls and slow bone loss. Combining strength training, and no you don’t have to lift your own body weight at the gym – the weight of a soup can will do it, with weight bearing aerobic exercise such as walking or Tai Chi is the perfect bone building combination.

So stay healthy and don’t forget about your bones when considering your healthy body.

Help Restore The Fenelon Theatre Marquee (July 2017)

June 27, 2017

FenelonMarquee_sign2The Fenelon Theatre building may be gone but the iconic marquee sign will be back! A group of dedicated community members, together with Maryboro Lodge – The Fenelon Museum, have formed a committee (Fenelon Theatre Marquee Group) and have been diligently working to gather information on the restoration and future placement. While this process will take time, it will also require money. Some funding has been secured through the Legacy Chest Fund, however more funds will be required. Through your donations we can make this happen! Donations are being accepted at Maryboro Lodge – The Fenelon Museum and Stokes on Trent. A Facebook page has also been created to allow everyone to follow along on this journey.

You Don’t Need To Like Math To Love This Movie (Nov. 2015)

November 8, 2015

A Brilliant Young Mind screens November 24, 2015 in Fenelon Falls

BrilliantYoungMindAs the weather continues to cool outside (against many of our collective wishes) there’s a movie screening in Fenelon Falls on November 24, 2015 that will surely warm your heart. A Brilliant Young Mind follows teenage math prodigy Nathan Ellis as he heads to Taiwan with his fellow British squad-mates to prepare for the upcoming International Mathematics Olympiad. Not your average kids, not your average love story; but as socially awkward as Nathan is, love still resonates with him when he meets a girl on a rival team. Asa Butterfield (Hugo, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas) stars as the brilliant young mind himself with Sally Hawkins as his mother and Rafe Spall (Life of Pi) as the influential teacher who at times ends up learning a lesson or two from his student. Director Morgan Matthews’ previous experience could not have been better suited for this endeavour – in 2007 he directed a documentary entitled “Beautiful Young Minds” about a group of students preparing for the IMO. A Brilliant Young Mind will show at the Fenelon Falls Secondary School and marks the last movie screening of the year for Films by the Falls (back in January, 2016).

About the movie: This heart-warming and life-affirming story follows the unconventional and hilarious relationship between student and teacher… and the unfathomable experience of first love – even when you don’t understand what love is. (C) Pinnacle Films. This film is rated PG. For more information visit http://tiff.net/filmcircuit/film/2558

Tickets for ‘A Brilliant Young Mind’ are $10 and will be available at the door on November 24, 2015 or in advance starting November 10th at Sweet Bottoms Coffee – 19 Colborne St, Fenelon Falls. Doors open at 6:30 PM with the feature presentation beginning at 7:30 PM. Fenelon Falls Secondary School is located at 66 Lindsay St. Films by the Falls screens movies on the last Tuesday of each month from September to May (excluding December).

Another Cure For The Cold

February 16, 2015

Kawartha Lake Singers upcoming events

It’s been a pretty cold winter so far and tough to find creative ways to stay warm. It’s always the extremities that seem to suffer most, but we have an enjoyable suggestion as to how you might cope with this problem. Why not keep those toes a tapping and those fingers snapping as you emote along to all those timeless tunes from the pre-war days. The aisles are also broad enough to contain even a little dancing. All you have to do to keep the weather at bay is to come along to Cambridge St. United Church on Sunday March 8th pm and help us get “Back to the Swing of Things”. This is a concert where the Kawartha Lakes Singers will really demonstrate their versatility, from softly sung ballads to hard driving.

This award winning choir has always embraced a wide ranging repertoire in every one of their seven seasons. They’ve sung everything from Bach to the Beatles, Handel to Gordon Lightfoot , Purcell to Gerschwin. They will end their season with a performance of the Missa Gaia, a modern day celebration of Mother Earth. This performance, where the choir shares music making with wolves and humpback whales, will take place at Cambridge St. United church on May 31st.

You can order tickets for $20.00 ($10.00 students) by Email at tickets@klsingers.ca or they may be purchased at the door. So…come on in out of the cold and join us for a feast of upbeat music. We can guarantee you a warm welcome!

Organic Meats and Vegetables at O’Brienview (May 2014)

May 25, 2014

O’Bienview Family Farm in Cameron is a Local Option for Organic Meat and Vegetables

Obrienviewfarm

O’Brienview Farm a small family run farm in Cameron that produces certified organic food products. These include Beef (Belgian Blue + Black Angus), Heritage Pork (Berkshire) and Poultry (ducks, chickens , eggs, turkeys). They also grow a large vegetable garden with a wide variety of veggies every year.

Pauline and Eric O’Brien and family are skilled at raising things: crops, cattle, pigs, chickens and children.  They have 9 kids and Pauline, who manages the farm with her family is up and working from 6am till dark.  Eric often works away from home in his profession as a Steam Fitter, along with 2 of their sons who live in the adjacent farm so farm chores fall to Pauline and the remaining family at home.

As Organic farmers the O’Briens raise all their crops and livestock using strict organic methods.  That means that they do not use chemicals on their crops, all feed is raised without chemicals and the animals themselves are not given antibiotics or any other chemical medicines. If antibiotics are required, the meat from those animals can no longer be sold as organic.

Lilly1-resized-image-520x305As the head of a large, healthy family Pauline grows as much food as possible to feed her family and she extends that to the meat and produce she sells at the Fenelon Falls Farmers’ Market and at the farm.  She strongly believes that healthy food is connected to peoples’ health.  Beef has been the mainstay of her fare at the Farmers’ Market, along with pork, chickens, turkeys and ducks occasionally on offer.

The O’Briens have built good relationships with neighbours and others in the food production business.  They believe in supporting local business and have found a lot of support from Len and Patty Thurston from the Butcher Block in Lindsay. Ron Hall Meats in Cresswell makes their sausage and smoke their meats and they cooperate with local farming families, including local Amish farmers such as the bakery and sawmill.

Customers can call 705-887-3974 or stop by the farm at 688 Country Lane in Cameron, Ontario or at the Fenelon Falls Farmers Market each Friday from 2 pm until 7 pm.  Visit their website here for more information.
