Accessibility Awareness Recognition Awards were presented to members of the community by the Accessibility Advisory Committee of the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Sobeys in Fenelon Falls was one of the businesses to receive the award this year.

Mark Knoester has always been very aware that customers come in all different shapes, sizes and needs. When the store was built in 2002 it already had a flat entrance level at the outside doors & the inside entrance doors. The aisles are always kept clear and wide enough for people to pass easily. A motorized cart is available for anyone who is unable to walk the store. Staff participation in accessible Customer Service training is mandatory. They are available to assist anyone who cannot reach products or lift heavy items. A carry out service is also available for anyone who cannot lift their groceries into their car.

Sobeys Fenelon Falls provides wonderful support to the community and community residents. One example is the partnership established with Community Care and the coordination of their Community Care volunteer drivers who provide rides to local residents requiring transportation to Sobeys to complete their weekly grocery shop.

The criteria for qualification included that nominees must be residents or work in the City of Kawartha Lakes, the nominee must be involved with accessibility issues, promote “Accessibility for All” within the municipality and demonstrate outstanding contribution within the last year.
