Town Crier Marks 100th Edition (July 2017)

July 25, 2017

how our community communicates

Dear readers,

Well! We’ve been on quite the journey together, haven’t we? Some 221 of us received the very first edition of the Fenelon Falls Town Crier when it was published on May 14, 2013. Today’s issue marks the 100th newsletter that has gone out via email to residents and fans of our Jewel of the Kawarthas. What started out as a project led by the City of Kawartha Lakes Economic Development Department has found a home at the Fenelon Falls Chamber of Commerce where it is currently produced and operated.

Edition 1 Header, The Fenelon Falls Town Crier

Edition 1 Header, The Fenelon Falls Town Crier

To understand the origins of the Town Crier, we have to go back to the beginning of the Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E) project that commenced in 2011 and was led by the City of Kawartha Lakes Economic Development Department. From that initiative, 5 committees were formed to lead BR+E projects; Infrastructure, Social Infrastructure, Leadership Team, Downtown Revitalization and Promotional Strategy/Marketing. The Promotional Strategy/Marketing Committee was chaired by Craig Bachman, and undertook several initiatives. There was the design of the new Fenelon Falls logo, co-ordination for the new village entry signs, and the establishing of the www.FenelonFalls.info website, and its partner e-newsletter, the Fenelon Falls Town Crier.

Town_Crier_Newsletter_IconInstrumental in the creation of the newsletter and website were Fenelon’s own Corrie Hynes and Janet Dalton. Both key members of the initial Committee, they took the initiative to get the web based projects going. Corrie has acted as Managing Editor and general media guru from the start. It is not an understatement to say that Corrie has been the foundation on which the Town Crier and www.FenelonFalls.info were built. Her media background and passion for community focused communication have been the driving force behind the scenes. Her guidance has been instrumental in the strategy and grassroots success of the popular Facebook page, website and newsletter. Although Janet passed away all too soon in the spring of 2014, part of her lasting legacy is her work on the website and mailchimp programming, which are still in use today. “I think the success of the Town Crier is an amazing testament to [Janet and Corrie’s] commitment,” says Fenelon Falls & District Chamber of Commerce Director Brian Rump, “and the number of volunteer hours required to build this project to 100 issues is mind-blowing.”

Take a walk down memory lane and view the 1st published edition of the Town Crier here: http://us4.campaign-archive2.com/?u=96e2c04ec7f8cdb50494afa8c&id=51869fae59

Corrie recently handed over the reins of the Town Crier to the Chamber of Commerce office staff. Shannon Bain, the Chamber Manager, has worked under Corrie since March 2014. “I’d say I can’t put into words how much I’ve learnt from Corrie but she’s taught me to express myself too well! Working with Corrie has given me such an amazing education on how to navigate the communication waters, how to highlight the best of what our Village offers and how to not freak out if the website goes down. I will miss working with her every edition, but know that her training and hard work to get us to edition 100 will continue to serve us into the future. She is one of the best and can’t be thanked enough!” Continues Brian Rump, “[The website and newsletter] would not have happened without her, and Economic Development initiatives such as this can never be successful without a volunteer like her.”

The Town Crier newsletter has become its own going concern, and has created awareness and engagement of all things Fenelon Falls to residents and visitors. Although some parts of the Town Crier were produced under contract, the bulk of the work to maintain the websites and populate the newsletter to date was done mainly by volunteers. As local coverage disappears across the country, it’s becoming more and more important to support stories and events that truly hit close to home. “The FenelonFalls.info website and Town Crier newsletter are a vital source of communication in Fenelon Falls and the Chamber is very proud to operate such an incredible source of information for anyone interested in our community” says Brent Simpson, Chamber President.

On behalf of the Fenelon Falls & District Chamber of Commerce and a grateful readership, thank you, Corrie, for all your hard work. We wish you the best and will forever remain grateful for the benefits you’ve brought to the Chamber and the residents of Fenelon Falls.

Town Crier turns 100And on behalf of the directors and staff of the Chamber, thank you, dear readers, volunteers, poster makers, article writers, committee members, past and present sponsors and anyone else who has ever uttered the words “have you heard of the Fenelon Falls Town Crier?”: High Fives to all involved! Join us in celebrating the 100th edition of the Town Crier. This issue was sent out to almost 1200 recipients. If you haven’t yet signed up, why not take a moment now (see link below) and help keep Fenelon Falls communicating!

President’s Message – Summer Wishes from the Fenelon Chamber (July 2017)

June 27, 2017

YOUR CHAMBER of COMMERCE quarterly update

FFDCC Logo JPEG copyI would like to take this opportunity to THANK all those Chamber Members and friends of the Chamber who have volunteered their time and skills to make Fenelon Falls THE JEWEL OF THE KAWARTHA’s. I am most impressed with our volunteer base in Fenelon Falls with the Chamber of Commerce and other community groups. It is many hands that make things happen.

Here is a short list of what the Chamber has accomplished in the 2nd quarter of 2017

  • One of our main tasks is the implementation of the actions that have been reviewed and approved by the City Council for “DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION”. There are many people that are required to ensure that all tasks are managed and implemented. For a complete list of tasks that need to happen and other interesting information about Fenelon Falls visit http://www.advantagekawarthalakes.ca/en/keySectors/fenelon-falls-downtown-revitalization.asp or drop into our Chamber Office by the locks.
  • The 2017 Kawartha Lakes Country Living Show was the most successful ever based on attendance and in conversations with the vendors and customers at the show. A HUGE thanks to Monica Jardine and her team in making this happen. We had an increase in attendance by 25%. Thanks to all our sponsors, supporters, vendors and customers.
  • CANADA DAY is almost here and there have been a lot of preparations by the Canada Day Committee to make this happen. The entire day is filled with activities topped off by a huge fireworks display at Garnet Graham Park celebrating Canada’s 150. Thank you Doug Elmslie and your team.
  • Your Special Events Committee has been very active again this year and we would like to thank all those who have sponsored this committee making Fenelon Falls the place to shop. Please remember that Midnight Madness is happening on July 8th so come out and support your local merchants.
  • We have a new addition to our Chamber office this summer. Please drop in and say hi to Rylea Rea who has joined our team to help out. She focused on running our Tourism Office and is very excited to help inform visitors from near and far of the wonderful ways our village shines. Do you have a special place in Fenelon that we shouldn’t keep secret? Why not drop us a note or give us a call. Email Rylea at info@fenelonfallschamber.com or reach her by phone at 705-887-3409.
  • Our downtown beautification committee has been working very hard and we would like to thank the Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society and our local businesses for the flowers on the light poles, bridge and hanging from the stores. They look FANTASTIC!
  • The Chamber has made a generous donation to the Rotary Club in support of the splash pad. We are looking forward to seeing it up and running by midsummer. Good Luck!

On behalf of the Fenelon Falls Chamber of Commerce I would like to wish you all a GREAT SUMMER. Please take a moment to drop in and see us.

Your Chamber of Commerce

Warm Holiday Greetings from FFCC (Dec-2014)

December 21, 2014

Fenelon Falls Santa Day wagon rideThe Membership and the Officers of the Fenelon Falls & District Chamber of Commerce wish you a very merry Christmas. We wish to thank you for your patronage and for the support you have shown for our programs.

Our year started out with the Country Living Show which was housed in the new Community Center and Arena. It was very successful and we are again encouraged to do even more this year.

The Merchants of Fenelon Falls supported our Events Committee who presented an Easter Hunt in March, Diva Night in May, Midnight Madness in June, Celebrating Silver Screen in August, Harvest Happenings in October and Old Town Christmas in December. The year of events culminated with Santa Day, perhaps the largest celebration of Santa in all of Canada.

In mid-summer we all celebrated Canada Day with an extravaganza of fireworks.

Your Chamber continued to operate the Tourist Office and was happy to greet many visitors and boaters to Fenelon Falls. The new extended docking has been well received and well used by our nautical friends.

The Village of Fenelon Falls was festooned with flowers again this year thanks to the efforts of the Village Improvement Committee and local merchants.

The work and plans created by the B.R.&E. project have been transitioned from CoKL management to our local committees. Much of the work will be taken on by Fenelon Forward and the Downtown Improvement Committee. We will continue with these efforts well into the future.

We would like to thank the editorial and technical staff that produce the Town Crier and www.FenelonFalls.info for an excellent publication. This is the one local internet blog and website that we can all take part in and it will assist us with promoting our businesses along with our social structure which is so vital to our community.

During the holiday season more than ever, our thoughts turn gratefully to those who have made our progress possible.

It is in this spirit that we say…

Thank you to the residents, cottagers and visitors of Fenelon Falls.

May peace, prosperity, and happiness be yours throughout the holidays and New Year.
