The Painful Truth About Shingles (Nov. 2016)

November 1, 2016

shinglesShingles is a painful, blistering rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After chickenpox heal, the virus remains in the nerve cells so every person who has had the chickenpox is at risk of getting Shingles. It is estimated that one in three people will get shingles and your risk increases as you age.

While the symptoms and discomfort of shingles generally resolve within a few weeks, some people will report long-lasting nerve pain which can last for months or even years. Additionally, shingles can result in scarring, bacterial infection and loss of hearing or vision.

The good news is that shingles are often preventable and if you are between the ages of 65-70, the vaccine is available free of charge. You should also note that if you are born in 1945, you are eligible for free vaccination until December 31st, 2016.

So if you meet the age criteria, please contact your doctor’s office to book an appointment, or to find out whether you should be vaccinated.  To find out more about the vaccine and this new government initiative you can also visit the website:
