Welcome to 2017… (Feb. 2017)

Healthy you

So here we are in February already. Did you make a new year’s resolution? Are you still sticking with it?

Making promises as you enter the new year goes back to the Babylonians over 4000 years ago. The assurances were generally founded in returning borrowed items and paying your debts and while resolutions continue to center on self-improvement, they now often focus on personal health and well-being.

So how do you make sure goals last beyond January 2nd? Of course there are no guarantees, but to increase your success, make sure your ambitions are realistic. A small step you achieve will be more rewarding than a large one you leave by the wayside.

“I will be healthier” which may encompass giving up smoking, losing weight and exercising all at once is almost guaranteed to set you up for failure. How about “I will replace my chip snacking with carrots” as a realistic first step instead? Once you accomplish this, there is no law against setting another goal in July!

Didn’t quite make all the goals? Don’t be so hard on yourself. Failing once on changing bad habits still puts you ahead of succumbing to the vice daily. So if you broke down and had that extra-large piece of cheesecake, don’t give up on your resolution. Skipping four bags of chips in January still means you are ahead!

Keep trying to improve and be healthy in 2017; one small step at a time.
